It must be said that every professional graphic designers could do sketchy things at least in the very early mind-mapping stage. Mostly, I prefer working with grid-like subjects, doing rational refined products. But the challenge I work on today is beyond the type which I’ve approached.
The Chicago Sausage House is a well established restaurant, bar & bistro specialising in homemade sausages and craft ales. They are looking for a new logo to roll out throughout the venue and want something fun, friendly, hand crafted and well design. They want something with a script and bespoke feel to it. Try experimenting with brush pens to create some fluid letter forms.
Well, it is not easy at all, specially when you do not have any habit of doing good writing/calligraphy. On the other hand, I just remember the wise words a great type designer, Doyald Young once said to the calligraphers that he was not a calligrapher, and he draw types, not write them. So after thinking in a while, I take a breath and confidently begin the work as usual.
Because this project requires a lot of energy on refine things. Initially, there is barely this very sketchy page which collect my brainstorming process.
